SARATOGA WINNERS IS GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

Ashes to ashes

Saratoga Winners had been shuttered since September 2006, but when the building burned to the ground last Thursday morning without ever reopening, a whole lifetime of musical memories came flooding back to Capital Region fans who spent night after night soaking up the sounds of hard-core, punk and heavy metal bands. Some of those bands were national and international superstars; others were young local bands with only a handful of gigs under their belts.

But Saratoga Winners' final incarnation as a hard-core heaven was only part of the nightspot's rich musical legacy.

Throughout its long history on the Capital Region club scene, Winners hosted performances by a diverse array of musicians, including Wilco, David Byrne, Melissa Etheridge, Peter Frampton, Aimee Mann, the Black Crowes, Ben Folds, the Ramones, Ministry, Widespread Panic, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker, Paul Weller, Counting Crows, Iggy Pop, Cowboy Junkies, Hank Williams III, Adam Ant, Warren Zevon, the Dead Kennedys, and Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Paul Westerburg, Faith No More, Meatloaf, Rob Zombie and whole lot more. You can name same more bands that you've seen at the winners in the comment section.
