MAN STEALS HORSE

SARATOGA SPRINGS -- A 41-year-old man claims he stole a horse named Buddy from Saratoga Race Course because he wanted to take it for a ride, police said.

Police arrested Jose Romero at 6:10 p.m. Tuesday and charged him with third-degree grand larceny for taking a horse that belonged to his ex-girlfriend, according to records filed in City Court.

Police said they found Romero with the quarter horse on the Oklahoma Training Track and returned it to its owner.

Romero, who is from Branford, Conn., was sent to Saratoga County jail today. His bail is set at $1,000.

He told police that his former girlfriend told him to stay away from the horse, but he went to take him for a ride, according to court papers.

Buddy is valued at $3,000. He was not hurt.

Romero is scheduled to return to court Aug. 13.
