The Albany Firebirds of arenafootball2 said today they have offered a contract to imprisoned former NFL quarterback Michael Vick for the remainder of the 2009 season.
Vick, who starred for the Atlanta Falcons, is serving a 23-month sentence for his role in a dogfighting operation.
The Firebirds said the one-year, incentive-laden offer would go into effect as soon as Vick is reinstated by the National Football League.
Vick, 28, is incarcerated at the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kan. He could be transferred to home confinement as early as May 21.
The Firebirds said their contract offer requires Vick to donate $100,000 to the Mohawk & Hudson River Humane Society.
The af2 prohibits member teams from signing players who are currently under NFL suspension.
The Firebirds are off to the worst start in franchise history at 0-5.
"After days of heated debate within the front office, we put together an offer that made everyone comfortable with the idea of signing (Vick),'' general manager Garen Szablewski said in a news release.
Vick was once the NFL's highest-paid player with a seven-year contract for $130 million. Af2 players make $200 per game.
