SMITH'S IS RE-OPENED

COHOES, NY -- The iconic Smith's restaurant at 171 Remsen Street has quietly re-opened after a change in ownership and a sprucing up of the interior. A formal grand re-opening will take place within the next few weeks.
Joe Hostig, a developer who purchased the restaurant from the mother-daughter team of Eunice Antonucci and daughter Margaret Kehn, added new wallpaper, chandeliers, tables and various decorations, as well as updating kitchen equipment.

The building was constructed in 1873 and was a theater and then a pool hall before becoming a tavern around the turn of the 20th Century. It eventually became a haven for politicians, best known in the lates '30s and thereafter when it was owned by Michael "Big Mike" Smith, the Democratic leader in this small riverside city.
